Canoeing videos from old VHS tapes

These are videos of various Bristol Canoe Club trips in the 1990s and early 2000s. The original digital vidoes were mostly taken by Quentin Nichols, and edited by him at the university where he worked. Quentin then shared these onto VHS tapes for the relevant club members. A few videos are from other sources.

In 2008, I transcribed these from the VHS copies, onto DVD. I then uploaded the DVD files 'raw' onto my laptop, but did nothing more with them. In June 2020 I converted the 'raw' video files into mp4s, and joined together the various parts to create the longer videos. I also split up the multiple shorter videos, which had been merged into a single DVD, so that they can be viewed as separate videos again.

I apologise for the quality of these transcriptions, but I'm a complete novice at anything to do with transcribing videos; at least these are now available.

Copyright: These videos are copyright the original author (i.e. Quentin Nichols). DO NOT share these videos on any other digital media without the EXPRESS permission of Quentin Nichols and/or myself (Conor O'Neill).

Conor O'Neill, 18th June 2020.

Note too; If you like this old stuff, there are also some other old (but not quite so old) videos on the club's website: Bristol Canoe Club old videos; some old trip reports: Bristol Canoe Club old trip reports; and old club magazines: Bristol Canoe Club old magazines.

Long videos

Year Where, What, Who Video
1993

Spain and France, 1993

Quentin took this video during the club trip in summer 1993. We spent a week at an international kayaking festival in Spain at a town called Sort, in the Pyrenees, on the river Noguera Pallaresa. We then went on to France (Briançon area) for another week of paddling in the Alps.

This trip took place at the end of July / beginning of August, so the river levels in France were very low compared with the levels commonly experienced in more recent trips (typically in June). We went back to Sort for another trip in 1998(?), but then the festival concentrated mostly on play-boating.

This was the first time that the club stayed in Camping la Cabane at St Crépin. This campsite has gone on to become the club's choice for many years.

Rivers: Spain: Noguera Pallaresa. France: Durance (Rabioux wave); Guil; Guisane; Ubaye ex-infranchisibles and racecource; Gyronde.

Paddlers: Quentin Nichols, Martyn Green, Conor O'Neill, Lisa Gunton, Tom Scott, Phil Millener, Penney Jamieson, Steve Lee, and others?

Scotland 2000 (Fort William)

Easter 2000. I (Conor) had recently dislocated my shoulder, so I wasn't paddling; therefore I became the video cameraman, using Richard Gunton's camera. I think that this was the first year that we stayed at the "Braveheart" house, but the house is never actually shown in the video.

This video is from Justin Sims. It wasn't one of the old VHS tapes, but it seems worth adding into this set. It has the advantage of a music soundtrack instead of the steady hiss of whitewater river white-noise. Trip write-up is on the Bristol Canoe Club website here.

Silly stuff

This seems to be a 'You've been framed' -style vide which Quentin copied from somewhere; mostly water-based mishaps. Nothing to do with Bristol Canoe Club!
